Dolly, the world’s first cloned mammal, was born 22 years ago today. The world-famous experiment was carried out at the Roslin Institute by Professor Sir Ian Wilmut
his team. When the animal was born, it was known from its white colour that the operation was successful. In other cases, the animal would have inherited the black face of her mother. The nucleotide, which contained the Dolly’s DNA, was extracted from another animal’s mammary cell.

Dolly had lived all her life at the Roslin Institute and she was not very different from her mates. She died at the age of six due to lung disease and severe rheumatism.

Clones were also made from her frozen DNA in 2007, this way Debbie, Denise, Dianna and Daisy were born.

Now, Dolly is exhibited at the Scottish National Museum. It can be visited to this day.
