First Human Heart Transplant Performed 50 Years Ago

South African surgeon Chris Barnard became world famous after transplanting the first human heart on the 3rd of December in 1967.The operation – that was considered equally important as the moon-landing in 1969 – took place in Cape Town fifty years ago, and it was performed by a then unknown surgeon Chris Barnard.

After the operation Barnard became a global icon of medicine and science – due to the power of mass media.
